While the JAG lawyers in the past may have received degrees from the local colleges that they are based around, there is now a specific college that all prospective lawyers must attend. This is the Rodger Williams College. The Navy is staggering the applicants of the college in order to prevent the civilians from being unable to attend the college. The college is also accepting practicing Naval lawyers who are in need for their continued education credits. The Naval officers enrolled in the college do not need to necessarily have to attend the physical college, but they may also be enrolled in the online education program. This prevents all of the Naval lawyers to having to move to a specific base and leave their homes and families.

The Navy does not require the Naval officer to enroll in the military for 20 years in order to be a JAG Lawyer. Most the JAG Lawyers do stay within the military for 20 years though, although the paralegals are more often to be in the military for 5 year stints. The minimum number of years allowed for the Judge Advocate General program is 5 years, no matter what a person enters the military as. The potential serviceman is required to take a test to verify if he or she would be suitable to train as a lawyer. This helps to eliminate the chances of training a person who is not able to handle the job or the education. This also helps to avoid the chances of a person failing at the process.

A lot of the alumni of the JAG Lawyer processes enter the political system after they have retired from the military. This can be as state representatives, senators or as advisors to the political figures. This enables the lawyer to continue his desire to serve the public while pursuing a new calling at the same time. An example of the continuation of the lawyer practice in the civilian life is the story of Captain Richard Debobes who now works on capital hill. He served in the military for 26 years and went on to work with the Senate on the Armed Forces Committee.

JAG lawyers bring to mind the top viewed lawyer show on television, JAG. However, Judge Advocate Generals are real people, doing real work. These people are Navy officers who have received their degrees in law. These lawyers were developed for the need for interpretation of the different laws and rules used while on the ships. These individuals were not originally lawyers but have since been mandated to become lawyers due to the intimate nature they have with the legal process.

The JAG lawyer is educated while in the Navy. They attend college either through the internet or through the actual attendance of college classes in person. The college is paid for through the military and the legal services of the JAG lawyers can be used by any naval personal. The JAG lawyers are assisted by JAG paralegals and civilians. The JAG paralegals are also educated by the Navy, but the civilians are educated through their own accords. The JAG lawyer can be accessed by anyone in the Navy and can serve as either prosecuting or defense lawyers.

There are many times that the Naval serviceman may need a JAG lawyer. The most common use of a JAG lawyer is for the building of a will and power of attorney. The JAG lawyer can also be used to handle family law problems, such as child custody and divorce terms. The Naval serviceman may also use the JAG lawyer to assist with financial restructuring including debt and tax delinquencies. The lawyers may also find that they are used to defend the service man in the case of a court martial. They may also be used when a service man faces a non-judicial punishment or administrative board. They may also be used to lodge a complaint about someone within the chain of command, especially supervisors.
